2005 CTA/Volvo Trucks Canada
Driver of the Year Goes to Driver with 5.6 Million Collision Free
Kilometres
(Toronto: Nov. 17, 2005) – Wayne Dixon, a truck
driver with Muskoka Transport Ltd. of Bracebridge, Ont., who has driven over 5.6
million collision free kilometers during a 40 year professional driving career,
has been named the Canadian Trucking Alliance/Volvo Trucks Canada Driver of the
Year for 2005. A keepsake trophy, cash prize and a trip to the OTA convention
were all part of the award presented to Mr. Dixon in Toronto Nov.
17.
Each year the award goes to a professional transport
driver who has a collision-free driving record and is an exemplary truck driver
both on and off the road. Nominees for this award come from existing recipients
of the Volvo Truck Driver of the Year award in each of the Canadian provinces.
Selection of this award takes place in Ottawa by a selection panel made up of
national safety and law enforcement organizations including Transport Canada,
the Traffic Injury Research Foundation of Canada, Canada Safety Council and the
Canadian Trucking Alliance. This year’s award was presented at a luncheon
hosted by Volvo Trucks Canada at the 2005 Ontario Trucking Association
convention (Nov. 17 - 18, Toronto Congress Centre, 650 Dixon
Road).
Mr. Dixon delivers loads of freight from Barrie, Ont.
to Michigan and New York State. Over the years he has operated in most U.S.
states and Canadian provinces.
“His professional approach to his job, his
positive attitude and easy going personality make him a ‘cut above the
rest,’” says Paul Hammond, President, Muskoka Transport
Ltd.
“Customers, dispatchers and fellow drivers all
hold the highest respect for Wayne in an industry that can be a daily challenge
for any driver,” says Jacky Finlayson, Director of Business Development
for Muskoka Transport.
“Mr. Dixon exemplifies the outstanding truck
drivers with whom Ontarians share the road,” says OTA President David
Bradley. “It is a great honour to recognize him with this highly coveted
award.”
In addition to his impressive safety record, Mr. Dixon
was named the 2004 OTA/Volvo Trucks Canada Driver of the Year, and has won
awards at three truck driving championships. He is also very involved in his
community, having served as a volunteer firefighter and driving instructor for
Vespra Township for 15 years, and coaching local youths in various sports
activities. In 1986 he was awarded the Vespra Township Public Service
Award.
Mr. Dixon, 61, lives in Minesing, Ont. with his wife,
Joan. Their son Gregory followed in his father’s footsteps and became a
truck driver - he has had no collisions in 17 years of professional truck
driving and competes in truck rodeos. The couple also has an adult daughter,
Christa.
