Ontario Roads Safer, Even As
Traffic Increases
Fatalities down by 20 per cent
over past decade
(May 6, 2008) --
Ontario roads are getting safer, according to the provincial government, which
says the number of fatalities has dropped by one-fifth over the past decade
despite a significant increase in the number of drivers.
"Even with more people and vehicles on our roads than
ever before, Ontario has maintained an excellent road safety record year after
year, thanks in part to the contributions of our road safety partners - and
today we are acknowledging their outstanding work," said Transportation Minister
Jim Bradley. Ontario works with over 150 road safety organizations in
communities across the province. Bradley mentioned the province’s work
with Ontario Trucking Association to promote road safety.
In a document circulated to reporters, the province
noted a number of recent initiatives that would further enhance road safety in
Ontario. One of the initiatives mentioned was the introduction of legislation to
make mandatory speed limiters on large trucks that would cap their maximum speed
at 105 kilometres per hour.
