Windsor Parkway Plan Aims to
Ease Traffic Woes at Windsor Border
(May 1, 2008) -- The Detroit River International
Crossing study group has released details of its $1.6 billion proposed
Windsor-Essex Parkway, even though many of the technical details were not
available for the public and the environmental assessment is not yet
complete.
The announcement follows years of ongoing debate and
study aimed at addressing congestion on the road leading to the Windsor crossing
(the world’s busiest border crossing) and the fact the road is located in
a residential area.
The DRIC package calls for 11 tunnels totalling 1.85
km in length, 240 acres of parkland covering the tunnels and 20 more
recreational trails. Officials said 12,000 jobs will be created in Ontario,
mostly in Windsor.
“OTA is pleased to hear of any step forward
taking place that is designed to remove congestion from Huron Line in
Windsor,” says OTA President David Bradley. “But there is still much
work to be done.”
The announcement was also welcomed by other groups,
including Chrysler, the University of Windsor, Windsor and District Chamber of
Commerce, Windsor Regional Hospital, and several unions.
