Move Over for Flashing Lights


OPP Move Over Press Release
(April 18, 2008) - A reminder to all road users to please move to the left lane when lights from emergency vehicles are flashing on the side of the road. Heavy fines could be handed out to those who do not comply. 

The legislation regarding passing emergency vehicles was passed in April 2003. While the law has been in existence for several years, the Ontario Provincial Police report that there are motorists who are failing to do so.

During a recent police crackdown, the OPP laid over 600 fail to "move over" charges in the month of February alone.

The penalty for failing to move to the left, are as follows:
First offence - $400 to $2,000, plus three demerit points upon conviction and possible suspension of driver’s licence for up to two years. Subsequent offence (within five years) - $1,000 to $4,000 fine, possible jail time up to six months and possible suspension of driver’s licence for up to two years.
