Cities Get Extra Cash from
Province: Premier says thousands of jobs will be created
(February 22, 2008) -- The Ontario Government
announced this week that Ontario’s municipalities are getting another $150
million to help repair and replace crumbling roads, antiquated sewers and other
outdated infrastructure,
"This will lead to about 6,700 new construction jobs
in communities. This funding will go where you have decided it needs to go, to
the priorities you deem important," said Premier Dalton
McGuinty.
The money tops up an existing $300 million
infrastructure fund announced in 2007, which had far more applications than it
could handle. The added money brings the infrastructure fund up to $450 million
but still falls well short of the demand from municipalities, which applied for
projects worth more than $700 million.
Projects will be announced shortly and municipalities
will have their money by March 31. Toronto is not eligible for this money, which
is to help rural and smaller municipalities. The infrastructure fund was
announced in last fall’s economic statement, at which time Toronto was given
$206 million to help with transit costs.
