OTA Member Doug Smith of
Manitoulin Transport Appointed to Order of Canada
(January, 2008) -- Douglas A, Smith, founder and
chairman of the Manitoulin Group of Companies and a longtime OTA member and
board member has been appointed to the Order of Canada. The announcement was
made public recently by Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean,
Governor General of Canada.
On the recommendation of the Advisory Council of the
Order of Canada, the Governor General announced the appointment of Mr. Smith for
his contributions as a business leader, philanthropist and champion of economic
and community development in northern Ontario.
Jackie Barton a Program Analyst with the Order of
Canada told OTA News, that in addition to his success in business and commerce,
Mr. Smith’s work in keeping Manitoulin Transport – a national
company – in Gore Bay contributed greatly to keeping that community
environment alive. He is also very well known in the area for being a
philanthropist in northern Ontario.
This is the second very significant
recognition for Mr. Smith. In November 2007 he was presented with the OTA
Trailmobile Service to Industry award.
The award is the highest honour
bestowed on an executive in the Ontario trucking industry and recognizes an
individual who, by their commitment, vision, leadership and unstinting service,
has made an outstanding contribution to the development and success of the truck
transportation industry in Ontario. The presentation took place at the
Ontario Trucking Association’s 81st annual convention in
Toronto.
The Order of Canada was awarded for the first time in
1967, during Canada’s Centennial Year, the Order of Canada launched the
creation of our country’s own system of honours.
There are two investiture ceremonies each year -- Mr.
Smith will be presented with his medal at one of these yet for which a date is
yet to be announced.
