Governors Highway Safety
Association Supports Speed Governors for Large Trucks
(March 7, 2007) -- The Executive Board of the
Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) voted unanimously to support a
petition to require speed governors to be set at no more than 68 mph on trucks
weighing more than 26,000 pounds.
Speed
governors
are devices fitted to the engines of vehicles to
limit their maximum speed. The action by GHSA occurred at its spring board
meeting in Washington, D.C.
The petition was filed by Road Safe America and a
consortium of trucking industry leaders. In January, the U.S. Department of
Transportation announced that the petition was open for public comment until
March 27.
GHSA is the nonprofit association representing the
highway safety offices of states, territories, the District of Columbia, Puerto
Rico and the Indian Nation. GHSA provides leadership and representation
for the states and territories to improve traffic safety, influence national
policy and enhance program management. Its members are appointed by their
Governors to administer federal and state highway safety funds and implement
state highway safety plans.
