Who We Are

The annual convention of the Ontario Trucking Association took place November 17 & 18, 2005 at the Toronto Congress Centre. The two day convention, the largest of its kind in Canada, is the place where industry leaders meet to discuss important industry issues and listen to speakers never before brought together under one roof. See below for highlights.

Networking – Convention provides numerous opportunities to catch up with old friends and meet new ones. New Products & Technology Exhibit – Featured a technical display of truck equipment, components and information technology. Exhibitors ranked this year’s exhibit as one of the best ever.

Graeme Deans of AT Kearney spoke to delegates about how the rise of China will affect their industry, company and life. An exceptional roster of speakers and topics kept delegates motivated and excited. Many of convention’s educational sessions were sold out. Attendees described them as jam packed with outstanding information that can be taken back to the office and applied the next day.
A panel of high profile CEOs (L-R) from Thomson Terminals, Contrans Income Fund, Challenger Motor Freight and Celadon Trucking encouraged delegates to refuse to bow under pressure to reverse the trucking industry’s trend to be paid fair rates for service.
Shippers – Shippers who value a good carrier and have developed carrier friendly programs formed a panel to discuss shipper strategies for the capacity crunch. Panelists included representatives from Unilever, Owens Corning, Ryder Canada and the Aberdeen Group.

Apprenticeships Announced at Convention -- Ontario Government and Trucking Industry Create New Apprenticeship For Tractor Trailer Drivers. Following the ministers announcement, Road Knight Rob Bedard (TST Overland Express) drove Minister Bentley to his home riding in this tractor-trailer. Bud Barr Longtime executive director of the OTA Education Foundation Bud Barr was recognized for his outstanding commitment to educating the trucking industry’s youth.

Measuring your company’s performance – National Post Business CEO of the Year Rick Gaetz, Vitran Corporation and Bob Pielsticker of KPMG spoke to this issue along with Julie Tanguay of LE Walker and Don Streuber of Bison Diversified. Bursaries were presented to students pursuing post-secondary education by the OTA Education Foundation Inc. A total of 53 bursaries were awarded in 2005.
Technical Users Conference – Carrie-Ann Baker of Volvo Powertrain North American and Lyle Adams of Detroit Diesel addressed the Technical Users Conference.
Merv Connolly Named 2005 Ontario Truck Driver of Year – The L. E. Walker Transport Ltd. owner-operator who has driven over five million collision free kilometres in 38 years, was named the Ontario Trucking Association/Volvo Trucks Canada Driver of the Year for 2005. See more
Road Safety – The OTA Road Knights Team program celebrated 10 years of making our roads safer with a special display to commemorate the anniversary. Current team member Alvin Kane (Kriska Transportation) is seen here with Rodney Orr (1997-1998 team) on the right.

Technical Users Conference – Delegates about to embark for an off-site visit to the Challenger Motor Freight Facility tour for a first-hand look at how one company has integrated various functions for ultimate fleet optimization. Delegates enjoy lunch while traveling in Challenger’s comfortable coach.
