Business Skills Development Programs for Owner-Operators

Often, the success of an owner-operator is not the result of just hard work and determination. The same can be said for “technical”, or in the case of the owner-operator, driving skills. As an entrepreneurial, independent business person, the owner-operator needs to develop similar skills to those who run large corporations. These include:

• Negotiating a contract;
• Analyzing equipment financing options;
• Developing, analyzing and understanding financial statements;
• Setting up a record keeping system;
• Doing a cost/benefit analysis;
• Producing monthly and end of year reports; and
• Selecting and working with professionals (accountant, bookkeeper, lawyer, etc.)

More and more owner-operators are beginning to realize that being an owner-operator is more than just having a say over what kind of truck he/she drives, and are accessing an increasing amount of business skills development programs in Canada. Some driver training schools offer business training for owner-operators, as do some private tax and accounting service companies.

For those who don’t have time to attend classes, the Canadian Trucking Human Resources Council (CTHRC) offers a Business Skills Development Course for Owner-Operators through distance learning.
